Canada to cap international student permits amid housing shortages

Posted on January 29, 2024   |

Canada implemented an immediate 2-year cap on international student permits and will halt work permits for certain postgraduate students.

The cap is expected to result in 360,000 approved study permits in 2024, marking a 35% reduction from the previous year.

The primary aim of the cap is to protect students attending colleges, particularly those in private-public partnerships, where inadequate services are offered at high costs.

Criticism has been directed at some private institutions for exploiting international students by operating under-resourced campuses, lacking student support, and charging high tuition fees while significantly increasing international student intake.

Immigration spiked population growth, which has strained crucial services like healthcare and education and contributed to the escalation of housing costs.
