Canada's housing crisis prompts residents to move from costly cities

Canada's housing affordability crisis is prompting residents, especially recent immigrants, to consider moving from expensive cities and even leaving the country.

28% of those surveyed are seriously contemplating leaving their current province, rising to 39% among recent immigrants who have been in Canada for a decade or less.

Many residents in urban hubs like the Greater Toronto Area and Metro Vancouver are looking to relocate to more affordable provinces like Alberta.

A significant 42% of those exploring new locations are considering leaving Canada, including destinations beyond the U.S.

12% of Canadians are considering emigration, with about 7.5% considering countries other than the U.S.

Recent immigrants are particularly impacted by high housing costs, influencing their desire to relocate to Canada.

The percentage of permanent residents becoming citizens has declined from 75% in 2001 to 45% in 2021, with Indians forming the largest group of new permanent residents recently.
