In northwest China, efforts are underway to provide temporary housing for survivors after 14,000 homes were destroyed in the deadliest earthquake.

The earthquake was the deadliest in 9 years as it took the lives of 135 people.

Ongoing rescue work reveals 12 people still missing, especially in areas affected by mudslides that covered two villages.

The death toll includes 113 in Gansu and 22 in the neighboring Qinghai province, with nearly 1,000 reported injuries.

The earthquake, measuring 6.2 in magnitude, struck the mountainous region on the Gansu side of the provincial boundary, around 1,300 kilometers southwest of Beijing.

Most earthquakes in China occur in the western regions, covering Gansu, Qinghai, Sichuan, Yunnan provinces, Xinjiang, and Tibet.
