Immigration decline leads to reduced construction demand in Stockholm

Posted on May 14, 2024   |

The population of the Stockholm region will grow to around 3.3 million by 2060, a decrease from the previous estimate of 3.4 million by 2050, as forecasted in 2015.

The decline in migration is identified as the primary reason for the revised projections, but it does not imply a loss of attractiveness for Stockholm.

Consequently, there is a reduced need for construction, with revised targets of 11,700-16,400 new homes annually until 2040, compared to the earlier goal of 20,700 new homes per year over 15 years.

There are significant disparities among municipalities in their ability to meet housing demands. Danderyd, for instance, has delivered only 53 new homes annually from 2015-2022, a fraction of what was previously considered necessary.

Danderyd's housing output represents less than one-fifth of the requirement outlined in the previous regional development plan.
