US mortgage rates surge in the final week of December

The 30-year fixed mortgage rate increased to 6.85%, up from 6.72% last week and 6.61% a year ago.
The 15-year fixed mortgage rate rose to 6.00%, compared to 5.92% last week and 5.93% a year ago.
Lenders raised mortgage rates in response to ongoing market conditions.
Homebuyers now face higher mortgage payments as both 30-year and 15-year rates climbed from last week and last year.
