BC establishes a revised annual timber cut for the Lillooet area
Posted on October 20, 2023 |
BC introduced a fresh annual timber harvest limit of 375,000 m³ for the Lillooet Timber Supply Area (TSA), signifying a 34% drop from the previous allocation, yet still maintaining a 9% increase over the 2016-2021 harvest levels.
This adjustment aims to strike a balance between timber extraction and environmental and cultural preservation.
It prioritizes the protection of old-growth zones, riparian areas, and wildlife habitats while respecting the cultural heritage of the First Nation.
Within the Lillooet AAC, 2 distinct partitions are outlined: one permits a maximum of 300,000 m³ of timber to be sourced from live trees, and the other allows up to 180,000 m³ from live trees in areas with slopes of less than 40%, ensuring the sustainable utilization of timber resources.
This revision aligns the timber harvest limits in Lillooet with recent harvest practices, reinforcing responsible resource management.
The updated AAC seeks to maintain the delicate balance between nature preservation and cultural heritage while enabling the sustainable use of timber resources in the Lillooet area.
