BC lumber trade council criticizes new U.S. softwood lumber duties

Posted on August 16, 2024   |

The president of the BC Lumber Trade Council (BCLTC) has criticized the U.S. Department of Commerce’s decision to increase duties on B.C. softwood lumber to 14.54%, up from 8.05%.

The BCLTC claims the higher duties are unfair and will lead to increased lumber costs in the U.S., making it harder for consumers to afford.

The BCLTC highlights that the tariff hike comes at a tough time for B.C. producers, risking jobs and manufacturing in the province.

The increased tariffs are expected to make the already challenging situation for B.C. lumber producers even worse, affecting jobs and local communities.

Canadian lumber producers have already paid over $9 billion in duties, which are held in deposit until the dispute is settled.

The BCLTC warns that these higher duties will add more pressure to B.C.'s lumber industry and worsen current economic difficulties.
