B.C. proposes changes to the building code for mass timber growth

Posted on December 18, 2023   |

A proposal for building code adjustments seeks to expand mass timber usage, promoting the construction of taller buildings for stronger communities.

The changes aim to accelerate the construction of schools, shopping centers, and housing, contributing to a more favorable environment and economy.

British Columbia is considering updates to the Building and Fire Codes, potentially allowing residential and office buildings to rise to 18 stories, surpassing the current 12-story limit.

The suggested changes also permit more exposed mass timber or fewer layers of encapsulation based on the building's height.

These adjustments would diversify the application of mass timber in various building types, including schools, shopping centers, and industrial facilities.
