Canada faces major trade disruption as port strike delays timber exports to the far East

Posted on November 11, 2024   |

Labor disputes have halted exports of Canadian timber, pulp, and paper, causing a standstill at Pacific ports.

The strike, starting on Monday, involves the British Columbian and Montreal branches of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union.

Bulk grain shipments are exempt, but forestry products and canola oil are affected.

Wood, pulp, paper, and byproducts account for 17% of Vancouver's container exports.

These products also make up 14% of Montreal's container exports.

The disruption, just before Christmas, threatens to impact the supply chain.

The Forest Products Association of Canada is calling for federal government intervention to resolve the issue.
