Canfor halts planned reinvestment in Houston, BC, and shuts down Polar sawmill

Posted on May 14, 2024   |

Canfor has announced the permanent closure of its Polar sawmill located in Bear Lake, BC, and the suspension of planned reinvestment initiatives in Houston, BC.

The decision follows a thorough assessment of persistent challenges, including a shortage of economically viable timber and difficult operational conditions in northern British Columbia.

With an annual production capacity of around 300 million board feet, the Polar sawmill has been under curtailment since January.

The closure of the Polar sawmill will impact the employment of 180 workers.

Canfor's decision reflects a response to ongoing operational difficulties and a careful consideration of economic factors affecting the region.
