Conifex Timber announces 2-week shutdown at BC sawmill

Posted on June 17, 2024   |

Conifex Timber Inc. in British Columbia will shut down its sawmill and planer for two weeks starting June 17th, reducing production by about 8,500 Mfbm.

The shutdown is due to weather-related transportation problems that delayed spring log deliveries and led to lower log inventories than planned.

Conifex is delivering spring-decked logs from the southern Mackenzie Timber Supply Area (TSA) and has started summer logging in the northern TSA, aiming to fully resume operations on July 2nd, despite possible ongoing weather issues.

Plans for high-performance computing (HPC) data centers in northern BC were paused in late 2022 due to an Order-in-Council (OIC) that stopped BC Hydro from providing electricity to cryptocurrency projects for 18 months.

The moratorium halted Conifex's development of two HPC sites that BC Hydro had identified as viable.

In April 2023, Conifex sought judicial review to overturn the OIC, but the petition was dismissed in February.

The court ruled that while a permanent ban on power supply to cryptocurrency miners wasn't allowed, a temporary ban was valid.
