Denmark pledges to plant 1 billion trees and convert 10% of farmland into forests

Denmark's lawmakers approved a plan to plant 1 billion trees and convert 10% of farmland into forests and natural habitats over 20 years.
The government describes the plan as the biggest change to Denmark’s landscape in over 100 years.
The project will allocate 43 billion kroner (US$6.1 billion) to purchase land from farmers for the transformation.
The plan will add 250,000 hectares (618,000 acres) of forests and convert 140,000 hectares (346,000 acres) of low-lying farmland into nature areas.
The initiative aims to reduce fertilizer use and address environmental issues.
Forests currently cover 14.6% of Denmark’s land, and this plan will expand that coverage.
