Forestry sector's uncertain future as Cyclone Gabrielle wrecked New Zealand's East Coast

Posted on February 27, 2023   |

On February 12th, Cyclone Gabrielle rammed through New Zealand, destroying Tairāwhiti, Hawkes Bay, Coromandel, and Northland regions which are home to 30% of the country’s forestry plantations.

Forestry has suffered heavy losses, processing plants have been closed, and roads have been blocked which will affect hundreds if not thousands of forestry workers.

A state of emergency has been declared as 11 people have been confirmed dead and over a thousand persons are still missing.
