Ireland bans Scottish logs to prevent beetle infestation
Posted on February 6, 2025 |
Ireland stopped importing Scottish logs because of concerns over larch bark beetle.
Ireland paused log imports from Scotland’s Pest Free Area while an investigation took place.
Since 2005, Scotland’s Pest Free Area has allowed log exports to Ireland with proof of being pest-free.
Scottish Forestry informed Ireland it can’t confirm the area is free of larch bark beetles.
Without this confirmation, Scotland doesn’t meet EU timber import rules.
Countries must verify pest status and inform trade partners under global trade rules.
