Q1 sees decline in US sawmill production

Posted on July 29, 2024   |

The production index for sawmills and wood preservation industries dropped to 91.9 in Q1, marking the second consecutive quarterly decline, with a 4.3% decrease following a similar drop in the previous quarter.

Compared to a year ago, production in these industries was 3.8% lower.

Full utilization rates in the sawmill and wood preservation industry fell slightly for the second straight quarter, from 60.8% to 60.4%.

The decline in production was partly due to fewer operational hours per week, not an increase in production capacity.

Employment in the sawmill and wood preservation industry has decreased since Q1 2023, falling from 93,130 to 89,260 by Q1 2024.

Employment in sawmills declined in every quarter of 2023.

The reduced operational hours and falling utilization rates contributed to the overall production decline in the industry.
