A senior Russian military official has been apprehended as part of a big fraud case related to overpriced timber used in constructing trenches and bunkers on the Ukrainian front.
The incident attracted global attention and is seen as evidence that corruption in Russia, extending to the military, government, and wealthy individuals, has supported Ukraine in resisting a potential Moscow invasion.
Vladimir Shishov, a deputy director in the Russian Defense Ministry, and Dmitry Levchenko, the CEO of a timber firm called IFK RNGS Capital, were arrested on charges of engaging in extensive fraud.
Dmitry Levchenko, known as a "Fixer," leads a local timber company with strong connections to affluent individuals in Russia.
The fraud scheme involved inflating the costs of lumber provided to the Defense Ministry, potentially exceeding 1 billion rubles (equivalent to $10.7 million).
