Russian lumber saw a substantial price drop amid boycotts and China's reduced demand

Prices for Russian softwood lumber sold abroad have dropped a lot in the past year, mainly because some countries are not buying from Russia, and China is not ordering as much wood.

Russia used to be the biggest seller of softwood lumber in the world in 2020 and 2021.

However, in 2022, the amount they sold went down a lot because of Russia invading Ukraine and countries in Europe, North America, and Asia deciding not to buy Russian wood.

The amount of wood Russia sold went from more than 31 million m³ in 2020 to 23 million m³ in 2022.

This continued in 2023, with estimates saying they'll sell less than 21 million m³ this year.

Stopping sales to Europe caused a big drop of 4.6 million m³ in the amount of wood Russia sold from 2021 to 2023, especially from sawmills in the Northwestern province.

Russia's usual customers for lumber also bought less in the last two years as a result, in total, Russia lost about 25% of the wood it used to sell since 2021.
