Russia's invasion leads to destruction of 60,000 hectares of Ukrainian forests
Posted on April 15, 2024 |
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has destroyed more than 60,000 hectares (148,000 acres) of forests.
The estimated damages from this destruction amount to $360 million.
Beyond immediate destruction, the war's environmental impact may lead to long-term ecological consequences.
These consequences include potential decreases in groundwater levels due to the loss of water-retaining forests and increased risks of soil erosion.
Moreover, the aftermath of the conflict could result in reduced biodiversity, worsened air quality, drying up of rivers and ponds, and heightened incidence of wildfires.
