San Group scales back Port Alberni operations as log supply falls short

Posted on December 2, 2024   |

San Group has operated its Port Alberni mills and remanufacturing plant on and off since October due to a log shortage.

In mid-October, the company shut down its large log mill and remanufacturing plant temporarily but kept the small log mill running with limited supply.

Around 75 workers were affected by the temporary shutdown, which has had an impact on staff.

The log shortage is linked to wildfires, delays in regulations, overharvesting, slow tree growth, and efforts to protect older forests.

The remanufacturing plant closed for two weeks, now runs at reduced capacity, according to Somerville.

San Group relies on lumber from its mills to keep the remanufacturing plant producing items for the retail market.

The company employs around 250 workers in Port Alberni and the Lower Mainland.
