Ukrainian forests at high risk due to Illegal logging of 62,000 m³

Over 62,000 cubic meters of Ukrainian forests were illegally logged last year, prioritizing timber revenue over preserving old-growth forests.

This illegal logging puts Ukraine at risk of being labeled a "high-risk" country by the EUDR, endangering its economic integration with the EU.

The WWF raised concerns about Resolution No. 454, a new Ukrainian timber regulation that might increase logging in old-growth and protected forests, despite plans to protect the Carpathians starting in 2027.

The conflict with Russia has increased the economic importance of Ukraine's forests.

The new regulation threatens Ukraine's trade with the EU, its largest forest product trading partner.

The upcoming EUDR will ban illegally or unsustainably harvested timber from EU markets, worsening Ukraine's trade status if illegal logging continues.

Before the war, Ukraine's forestry sector contributed only 1.1-1.2% to GDP, but it's a key income source for regions like the Carpathians and Polesia.

Increased logging due to the new regulation could harm Ukraine's compliance with EU standards and its economic ties with the EU.
