US Army mandates mass timber in vertical construction planning

Posted on November 13, 2023   |

The US Army Corps of Engineers introduced a new policy mandating the consideration of mass timber during the initial design phase of all vertical construction projects.

This development comes in response to a prior report by Wood Central, focusing on a novel policy within the US Department of Defense.

Starting in 2027, this policy encompasses various forms of mass timber, including CLT, Glulam, DLT, NLT, and LVL.

This marks a significant leap forward in the adoption of eco-friendly construction materials, especially given the extensive scope of the MILCON (US Military Construction Program) market.

In September, the US Congress approved a budget of over $16.674 billion for MILCON, with a substantial portion allocated to military construction and family housing projects, including those led by the US Army Corps of Engineers.
