Vietnam boosts forestry exports by 6% in December, recording 15.8% yearly rise

Vietnam earned $1.55 billion from timber and wood exports in December, marking a 6% increase from November and a 15.8% rise compared to last year. 

Wood products alone contributed $1.1 billion, up 7.5% from November and 15.5% year-on-year.

Vietnam's total forestry export turnover reached $1.68 billion in December, including both wood and non-wood products. 

Annual forestry exports hit $17.3 billion, showing a 19.4% increase from the previous year.

Timber and wood products made up $16.3 billion of the total export value in 2024, with non-wood products accounting for the rest. 

The sector achieved a $14.4 billion trade surplus.

Wooden frame chairs led Vietnam’s exports, generating $3.1 billion by November 2024, reflecting a 24% increase from last year. 

Other categories surpassing $1 billion included living room furniture, wood chips, and bedroom furniture.

The US remained Vietnam’s largest market, purchasing over 55% of total timber and wood exports.

In 2024, Vietnam planted over 270,000 hectares of new forests, a 2.4% increase from the previous year, and harvested 22.7 million cubic metres of wood, up 7.9% year-on-year.

The Forestry Department focused on improving plant variety management in 2024. 

The forestry sector targets a 5% production growth in 2025, with forestry export turnover projected to reach $18 billion.
