Vietnamese timber exporters to pay high prices due to Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification

Vietnamese manufacturers and exporters of timber products are dropping FSC-certified timber due to its high cost.

At present, low order books are causing manufacturers to avoid storing costly timber, although low inventory can affect the ability to fill the demand.

Some imported timber materials into the country were cheaper due to soft export market demand and fixed freight rates.

However, FSC-certified logs from the EU are costly for manufacturers, driving them to go for home-grown, certified solutions.

Vietnam exports wood products to over 100 countries and imports wood materials from 80 countries, so it is affected when the export markets modify timber trade and environmental policies.

Producers will not fund FSC-certified wood material areas if profits continue to drop, which will be easier for foreign buyers to order from Vietnam.
