WA forestry in crisis as the government fails to supply timber to businesses

Posted on August 4, 2023   |

Western Australia's forestry called out the government for lacking responsibilities to the sector, including providing timber to businesses.

The Australia Labor Party (ALP) coordinates with the Australian Federal Government and State and Territorial Government, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, the Northern Territory, and the ACT is split nationally on native forests.

The Labor Environmental Action Network (LEAN) pushed to leave native forests, an industrial strategy that aims to rescue native forests.

Forest Industries Federation WA (FIFWA) called an urgent meeting with Forestry Minister to discuss the issue but the minister’s office gave excuses and will not provide a time for its reply.

Businesses were informed that the Forest Products Commission (FPC) is focusing on firewood harvesting over sawlog for the rest of 2023, leaving them expecting their contracted sawlogs high and dry.

This is contradictory to the government’s commitment to the industry and FPC's supply duties earlier in 2023.

Businesses accepted the government’s fair payments, which were insufficient from the pre-decision market value of the companies.
