West Fraser's US lumber production beat Canadian output

Posted on April 24, 2023   |

In 2022, In North America, West Fraser was the top lumber producer with 30% more softwood lumber than any other company.

The total output reached 7,035 million board feet (MMBF) compared to Canfor's 2,469 MMBF, and Weyerhaeuser's 5,330 MMBF.

The top 10 North American softwood lumber producers combined for 37,637 MMBF, which is an increase of 5.7% compared to the total output of Forisk’s 2021 Top 10 producer list.

However, the permanent closure of the BC mill and the indefinite curtailment of the Perry, Florida sawmill in January 2023 and weak new home construction demand neutralized the upward trend of the lumber production

Thus, on January 1, 2023, in BC, stumpage rates dropped due to the market-based adjustments related to lumber prices, and given the current commodity price environment.

In Alberta, stumpage rates are predicted to be low as long as SPF prices remain down; they are linked to the price of lumber and react quickly to changes in lumber prices.
