Brazilian Wood-Based Exports Jump 20% in October 2024
Posted on December 6, 2024 |
Brazil's wood-based export sector experienced a significant boost in October 2024, with a 20% increase in export value compared to the same period last year (2023), according to the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO). The sector's total export value climbed from $219.9 million in October 2023 to $263.6 million in October 2024.
Key Growth Drivers
Among the standout performers, pine-sawn wood saw the most dramatic growth.
Overall Growth:
- Brazilian wood-based product exports (excluding pulp and paper) increased by 20%, from $219.9 million in October 2023 to $263.6 million in October 2024 (source: ITTO).
Pine Sawnwood:
- Export value increased 75%, from $8.6 million to $50.1 million.
- Export volume grew 62%, from 127,900 m³ to 206,500 m³.
Tropical Sawnwood:
- Export volume rose 5%, from 20,600 m³ to 21,700 m³.
- Export value declined 4%, from $9.1 million to $8.7 million.
Pine Plywood:
- Export value grew 30%, from $43.8 million to $57.1 million.
- Export volume increased 20%, from 140,600 m³ to 169,100 m³.
Tropical Plywood:
- Export value decreased 8%, from $1.3 million to $1.2 million.
- Export volume increased 24%, from 1,700 m³ to 2,100 m³.
Wooden Furniture:
- Export value climbed 4%, from $46.2 million to $48.2 million.
Implications for the Industry
This marked growth reflects strong global demand for Brazilian wood products, especially in the construction and furniture sectors. The dramatic rise in pine sawn wood and plywood exports suggests an increased preference for these materials in global lumber markets. However, the declining value of tropical plywood and sawn wood exports highlights challenges in pricing or market competition.
Industry analysts attribute the surge to favourable global timber market conditions and strategic efforts by Brazilian exporters to enhance production and distribution efficiency. The disparity in value and volume growth for tropical wood products could indicate pricing pressures or shifts in demand patterns.
Global Timber Industry Outlook
With a steady increase in global construction activities and sustainable wood product initiatives, Brazil's wood-based export sector is expected to maintain positive momentum in the coming months. However, balancing volume and value growth will remain critical to maximising profitability and market share.
