47 vessels return to Suez Canal route as traffic picks up

Posted on February 26, 2025   |

Since early February, 47 ships have returned to the Suez Canal, opting for a shorter route instead of the Cape of Good Hope.

The Suez Canal Authority expects more vessels to pass through as regional stability improves following the January 19 ceasefire between Hamas and Israel.

In 2024, canal revenue declined by 60%, reaching USD 4 billion.

To minimize financial losses, authorities maintained transit fees and enhanced maritime services.

A recent upgrade in the canal’s southern section boosted daily capacity from six to eight ships, improving traffic flow.
