Baltimore Port completes reopening of main shipping channel on June 7

Posted on June 7, 2024   |

Baltimore port’s main shipping channel, 213 meters wide, will reopen this weekend, 75 days after the Dali containership crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Crews have removed the last large piece of the damaged bridge from the Patapsco River’s main shipping channel.

Salvage teams will clear smaller debris from the water using dredging buckets and a large grab before reopening the channel.

The Dali, managed by Synergy Group and chartered by Maersk, experienced electrical blackouts leading to the crash, which killed six construction workers.

The ship lost power about four minutes before the crash, causing a total blackout when it was 1 km from the bridge.

Plans are in place to build a replacement bridge by 2028, with the Dali accident expected to result in one of the largest marine insurance claims in history.

Full operations at Baltimore Port, the ninth-largest in the U.S., are set to resume after the significant disruption caused by the bridge collision.
