Beijing warns shipping sector after hazardous cargo blast rocks Ningbo

China’s Maritime Safety Administration (MSA) has issued renewed warnings about the safe transport of hazardous cargo following an explosion on the YM Mobility boxship in Ningbo.

The blast, captured on video last Friday and widely reported, caused no injuries aboard the 6,589 TEU vessel owned by Yang Ming.

Videos show the ship emitting thick smoke, followed by a large explosion, a fire, and debris, including a container that was thrown about 200 meters into the air.

The fire was fueled by explosive materials like lithium batteries and tert-butyl peroxybenzoate, which should be kept below 30°C, while temperatures in Ningbo reached 39°C.

The YM Mobility is expected to be out of service for about three months for repairs after the investigation concludes.

The MSA’s updated warnings stress the need for proper handling and storage of hazardous materials to prevent accidents.

The incident highlights the dangers of transporting hazardous cargo and the importance of adhering to safety guidelines.
