Canadian ports saw an increase in blank sailings amid rail strike concerns

Posted on June 17, 2024   |

Due to the potential rail strike in Canada, shipping lines are canceling calls to Vancouver and Prince Rupert, the main Pacific gateways.

The anticipation of the strike has led to 14 confirmed port swaps and diversions to US ports starting in June.

Since mid-May, three port diversions have been completed, with upcoming blank sailings through early August, including six from Zim’s ZPX service, which will skip Vancouver until at least week 31.

MSC’s Chinook, SM Lines’ PNS, THE Alliance’s PN4 service, and Ocean Alliance’s PNW1, PNW4, and PNW3 services will each skip Vancouver once during this period.

Prince Rupert will have three blank sailings from THE Alliance’s PN4 and the Ocean Alliance’s PSW2 and PNW2 services.

Atlantic coast ports in Canada expect seven blank sailings, including three from Tropical Shipping’s Canada-Caribbean loop due to maintenance on the Tropic Lissette.

Carriers are taking these measures in response to the looming rail strike, significantly affecting shipping schedules to and from Canadian ports.
