China and Russia launch Arctic Express No 1 rail-sea cargo service

China and Russia have introduced the Arctic Express No 1 rail-sea cargo service, managed by New Shipping and Rosatom.

The service transports cargo by rail from Moscow to Arkhangelsk and then ships it across the Arctic and North Pacific oceans to Chinese ports.

The 13,200 km journey takes 20 to 25 days, approximately a week faster than the Northern Sea Route (NSR).

Rosatom and NewNew Shipping have partnered to develop a fleet of five ice-class box ships for continuous year-round use.

These new ice-class ships are set to be delivered by 2027.
