China leads global box shipbuilding boom with 68.5% market share in 2024

China leads global box shipbuilding with an orderbook extending to 2030, which is nearly three times larger than South Korea’s.
Chinese shipyards took the lead in box ship construction in 2015 and regained dominance in 2020, currently holding 68.5% of the global orderbook in teu capacity.
South Korea has a much smaller share of 23.3% in the global box ship orderbook.
In 2020, Chinese shipyards secured 630,000 teu worth of new orders compared to South Korea’s 380,000 teu.
In 2024, China’s shipyards received 3.61 million teu in orders, significantly outpacing South Korea’s 660,000 teu.
