Chinese port container throughput surges by 4.8% in Jan-Aug 2023

Chinese ports witnessed an increase in container throughput for Jan-Aug 2023, with a 4.8% YoY growth, reaching 203.7 million TEU.

Cargo volume at Chinese ports also expanded, showing an 8.4% YoY rise, totaling 1.11 million tonnes.

The Port of Shanghai, the world's busiest in 2022, reported a 3.6% YoY increase in container volumes, handling 32.14 million TEU from January to August 2023.

The Port of Ningbo-Zhoushan exhibited strong performance, handling a total of 24 million TEU in H! 2023.

The Port of Qingdao, achieved a remarkable 11.7% growth during the first 8 months of 2023, handling 18.49 million TEU.

In terms of container freight rates, the average value of the Ningbo Container Freight Index (NCFI) in September rose by 10.6% compared to the previous month. Fluctuations in freight rates were influenced by transportation demand and cargo volume changes.
