DP World to invest $1.3 billion to make London gateway the UK’s biggest container port
Posted on October 15, 2024 |
DP World is investing £1bn ($1.3bn) to expand London Gateway, aiming to make it the biggest container port in the UK within 5 years.
The expansion includes adding 2 more shipping berths, bringing the total to 6, capable of handling the largest container ships in the world.
A second rail terminal will be built to manage the expected rise in container trade at the port.
By the end of the decade, the quayside will stretch over 2.5 km and be able to dock six ships at once, each over 400m long.
Europe’s tallest quay cranes, the height of Big Ben, will be installed to support the new infrastructure.
Pending approval, the expansion will significantly increase the port’s current capacity of handling nearly 2 million TEU annually.
