EU-UK relations improve as bloc delays new port checks

Posted on July 19, 2024   |

The EU has delayed new port checks that could have caused congestion, helping to improve EU-UK relations.

The entry-exit system (EES), which requires non-EU citizens to register biometric data, was expected to disrupt supply chains, especially across the Channel.

After lobbying by French officials, the EES implementation date has been postponed from October 6 to November 10, with a possible additional one-week delay.

This postponement aims to prevent supply chain delays and reduce port congestion.

Changes to the EES include a “relief valve” that allows travelers at busy checkpoints to skip biometric data submission.

These steps are part of efforts to enhance EU-UK relations and ensure smoother trade and travel.
