German Union urges strike at Hamburg Port due to failed talks

The German union Vereinte Dienstleistungsgewerkschaft (ver.di) has called for a strike among seaport workers in Hamburg.

The strike will affect Hamburg, Bremen, Bremerhaven, Brake, and Emden starting June 17 at 5:00 am local time, lasting about 24 to 48 hours depending on the port.

The decision follows unsuccessful negotiations on June 6, where the Central Association of German Seaport Operators (ZDS) did not present an acceptable offer.

ver.di aims to pressure employers for better terms during the third round of collective bargaining on June 17-18 in Hamburg, coinciding with the strike.

The union demands a EUR 3 ($3.21) per hour wage increase starting June 1, and adjustments in shift allowances to rectify previous agreements.

The proposed collective agreement spans 12 months, emphasizing the need for fair wages and improved working conditions.

The strike reflects strong support from employees for these demands and the union's efforts to secure significant improvements.
