In 2022, global container port’s throughput saw a slight increase of less than 1% to 454 million TEU, caused by China and the Middle East.

The figure is a record high but the growth rate was lower compared to 2021.

China’s top 10 ports grew by 4.1% to 222 million TEU, while the growth rate in 2021 reached 6.2%.

Dubai’s throughput grew by 1.6% to 13.9 million TEU, with Tangier-Med port’s volumes growing by 5.6% to 7.6 million TEU.

However, many Indian sub-continent, European, and Asian ports registered declines.

Europe's 3 main ports, Rotterdam, Antwerp-Bruges, and Hamburg, saw a decrease in volumes by 5.8%, 5.5%, and 5.4%, respectively, below 2019 levels.

In the US, the Port of New York and New Jersey’s become the busiest ports as volumes grew by 5.3%, while Savannah grew by 4.7%.

Los Angeles’s container throughput fell by 5.3%, falling to second place and volumes for the top 4 US container ports LA, Long Beach, Savannah, and NY/NJ are above 2019 levels.
