IMO urges immediate halt to Red Sea attacks

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) members have called for an immediate end to attacks on ships and seafarers in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
The IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee condemned the attacks as 'illegal and unjustifiable' in a resolution passed in London, noting the threat to global trade and navigation.
This is the first resolution since the Houthis hijacked the MV Galaxy Leader in November 2023, leading to around 50 more attacks and several seafarer deaths.
The 25 crew members of the Galaxy Leader are still held captive, and the Committee has demanded their immediate and unconditional release.
The Committee criticized the Houthis for endangering lives, disrupting humanitarian aid, raising aid costs, and destabilizing the region.
It called for peaceful dialogue to resolve the issue and urged those with influence over the Houthis to help stop the attacks.
The resolution reminded all 176 IMO Member States of their duty under the UN arms embargo to prevent supplying arms to the Houthis, directly or indirectly.
