Indian shippers are receiving numerous notices for General Rate Increase (GRI) and Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) as container lines aim to take advantage of the challenging situation in the Red Sea.

MSC has introduced its 3rd round of GRI and PSS plans for January, resulting in a total increase of $5,000 per container on the India-US trade.

The Geneva-based liner, MSC, which faced a ship attack in the Red Sea in late December, will implement a GRI of $1,000 per container for all cargo shipped from India to the US East/West/Gulf coasts and San Juan (Puerto Rico) starting January 29.

MSC Agency (India) will enforce a fresh PSS of $1,600 per container on the same trade lane from January 29.

This follows surcharges of $500 per container from January 10 and $800 per box from January 22.

Other carriers serving Indian trades have also announced multiple rounds of significant rate increase plans for January, including emergency surcharges.
