July marks 3rd consecutive month of cargo decline on Canadian Railways

Posted on October 3, 2023   |

Canadian railways transported 28.9 million tons of cargo in July, reflecting a 5.1% year-over-year decline.

This marks the 3rd straight month of decreasing cargo tonnage.

The freight volume for July was below the 5-year average of 31.1 million tons.

The year-over-year drop was partly attributed to a labor dispute at West Coast ports in Canada, which affected the shipping of potash and certain energy products.

Freight traffic arriving from the US in July also sustained its 11th consecutive monthly decline, falling by 13.8% year-over-year to reach the lowest July level in 4 years at 3.5 million tons.
