The country's trade union, ver.di, declared a strike to secure a 10.5% salary hike, or $544 more per month, for 2.5 million public sector workers.

The government is offering a 5% increase in 2 tranches and a one-time payment of $2.722; talks are expected to restart next week, but the strike is likely to be until 24 March.

The strike has shut vessel activities on the Elbe and the port for all departing vessels.
