Longshoremen's Association plans to ratify a new contract with East & Gulf Coast port employers

The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) will soon move forward with ratifying a new contract with East and Gulf Coast port employers.

Union leaders will meet with ILA wage scale delegates in the next few weeks to discuss the tentative agreement with terminal operators and ocean carriers.

If delegates approve the deal, union members will vote on a six-year contract that covers pay and benefits for 25,000 dockworkers from Texas to Boston.

On January 8, the union and employers avoided a port strike by agreeing to allow automated cranes and robots in exchange for job security for union members.

The agreement offers a 62% pay raise over the contract's duration, which was initially agreed after a brief strike in October.

The current contract extension was set to expire on January 15, but the ILA will keep working under its terms until the new contract is approved.
