Maersk announces extra fees for shipping containers from Asia due to changes in route away from the Suez Canal.

The added charges include an immediate Transit Disruption Surcharge (TDS) for the longer journey and a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) starting January 1.

Maersk attributes the additional costs to "severe operational disruption" caused by the route adjustment.

Standard 20-foot containers traveling from China to Northern Europe will incur a $700 extra fee, comprising a $200 TDS and a $500 PSS.

Containers bound for the east coast of North America will face a $500 charge, including a $200 TDS and a $300 PSS.
