March sees surge in cargo volume at US Gulf Coast Ports

Container cargo volumes surged at ports in Houston, New Orleans, and Mobile, Alabama, during March.
Port Houston saw a notable increase, handling 360,991 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in March, marking a 20% year-over-year rise.
Throughout the first quarter, total cargo flows through the Houston Ship Channel and Port Houston's container facilities, Barbours Cut and Bayport, increased by 4%.
Increased consumer spending on items such as furniture and appliances contributed to a 23% year-over-year rise in loaded import volumes in March and a 14% increase year-to-date.
Port Houston managed 1.06 million TEUs from January to March, reflecting a 15% surge compared to the same period in 2023.
Loaded export volumes, primarily of resins, also experienced a notable uptick, rising by 12% year-over-year in March and 15% year-to-date to reach 404,124 TEUs.
The Port of New Orleans reported a 24% year-over-year increase, handling 45,214 TEUs in March.
The Port of Corpus Christi observed a slight decline in total cargo, down 1.7% year-over-year to 17.2 million tons in March.
