Montreal port strike to resume on Sunday as union serves notice to Maritime Employers Association

A new strike action is set to begin at the Port of Montreal, following a strike notice from the Port of Montreal Longshoremen’s Union, CUPE Local 375, received by the Maritime Employers Association (MEA).
The 24-hour strike will stop all work at Montreal’s port, including the Contrecœur terminal, from 7:00 am on Sunday, October 27, until 6:59 am the following day.
An overtime ban, in effect since October 10, has continued to disrupt port operations, creating significant stability issues across Quebec’s and Canada’s supply chains.
Union-led pressure tactics have added to the port’s operational challenges, further impacting reliability and stability at Montreal’s port.
Since 2022, container volumes at the Port of Montreal have dropped by 24%, with much of this lost traffic shifting to U.S. East Coast ports, though labor issues there may reverse this trend.
The port handled 1.7 million TEU in both 2021 and 2022, dropping to 1.5 million TEU last year; as of 2024, it has moved 1.1 million TEU year-to-date.
The Port of Montreal hosts 12 container services, with three vessels en route, including the 5,000 TEU MSC Anya.
The MSC Anya, part of the Montreal Express1 service run by Cosco, OOCL, and Hapag-Lloyd, is expected at Viau Container Terminal on October 26, potentially affected by the strike, with a scheduled departure on October 28.
