Montreal’s Viau & Maisonneuve terminals disrupted as ILA Union calls for strike on October 31st

Posted on October 31, 2024   |

ILA union members at the Port of Montreal have initiated an unlimited general strike, starting today at 11 AM, affecting operations at the Viau and Maisonneuve terminals.

The longshoremen's strike seeks to disrupt operations significantly, impacting several companies and threatening the financial health of the Maritime Employers Association (MEA).

The MEA may appoint a special mediator to assist in reaching an agreement by December 3.

Montreal longshoremen have been without a collective labor agreement since December 2023, leading to this strike.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) closed the port for a dockworkers meeting on Sunday and issued a 72-hour strike notice on Monday.

The ongoing strike adds to the difficulties the MEA faces, which is already dealing with falling cargo volumes.
