MSC to revitalize Spain's rail freight operator

MSC to revitalize Spain's rail freight operator

Posted on October 3, 2023   |

Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC), the world's largest container line, has been chosen to collaborate with Spain's national rail freight operator, Renfe Mercanias, as part of its revitalization efforts.

MSC secured this partnership opportunity over competitors like CMA CGM and Maersk.

In a move to revive its freight unit, Renfe, Spain's state-run rail operator opted for a private partner.

In this regard, Medlog, an MSC logistics subsidiary, will acquire a 50% stake in Renfe Mercanias.

The decision follows over a year of negotiations and a rigorous selection process involving more than 30 companies.

Both Maersk and CMA CGM also advanced to the final stages of consideration.

The final approval of Renfe's decision is contingent upon authorization by the Spanish government.
