Northern Ireland's port freight volume slips from previous record highs

Freight volumes in Northern Ireland's ports have retreated from the previous record year.

The total tonnage for 2022 was 27.9 million, reflecting a 5.3% decrease from the 29.5 million in 2021.

Across all UK ports, there has been an overall increase in total tonnage, rising by 3% from 445.7 million to 458.9 million.

The use of car ferries has made a strong recovery post-pandemic, reaching its highest level in Northern Ireland ports since 2004.

Car ferry traffic surged by 9.5% to 583,000 vehicles, representing an increase of nearly 25% compared to pre-Covid levels in 2019.

The decline in freight traffic resulted in a reduction in both inward goods (4.1% to 16.5 million tonnes) and outward traffic (7.1% to 11.5 million tonnes) volumes in Northern Ireland's ports in 2022.
