Panama Canal to postpone depth restrictions after rain relieved the region

Posted on July 3, 2023   |

The recent rainfall eased the pressure on the canal and provided comfort for traveling ships.

Rainfall follows a prolonged drought that has sunk water levels at the canal to unprecedented levels.

In the next 72 hours, rainfall will drop to a range of 70 mm to 80 mm in the basin of the Panama Canal.

Neo-Panamax ships will be able to maintain their prior depth limit of 44.0 feet, while Panamax ships will be able to operate at a depth of 39.5 feet.
