Port operations halted in Shanghai and Ningbo due to Typhoon Bebinca

Posted on September 20, 2024   |

Typhoon Bebinca has caused major disruptions at Shanghai’s container terminals, leading to vessel delays and bunching that may last over a week.

It’s the strongest typhoon to hit Shanghai since 1949, with ships returning to port after moving away to avoid the storm, adding to the delays.

Ningbo port saw a 90% drop in vessel arrivals over the weekend, with no ships arriving on Sunday due to the storm.

Container loading and unloading at Shanghai’s Yangshan and Waigang terminals paused on Sunday, and Ningbo stopped operations on Saturday.

Hapag-Lloyd reports ships are waiting 36-60 hours to dock in Shanghai, while Ningbo’s wait times are around 24-48 hours.

These disruptions in Shanghai and Ningbo ports are expected to impact vessel schedules at destination ports due to the delays.
